Find unclaimed business listings by searching for “unclaimed businesses in (your location)” or “claim your listing on google”

Google will show a list of all the sites with potential matches. Click on each site to see if it’s yours, and then claim the listing by clicking “claim this site.”

If Google shows you a page that says, “This business could not be located,” it means your location has been claimed. Claiming your profile won’t help to find unclaimed listings in other locations.

The first step in improving your Google search presence is to add your business or claim Google business listing profile on Google. Once you’ve claimed and verified the business profile, you can customize it for optimal search results.

  1. Visit
  2. Click the ‘Sign in’ or ‘manage’. You will be asked for your Google account details or to signup for a new Google account
  3. Create a new account or log in with your Google account. You can also sign up using an email address.
  4. Search for your business name and address. You will be given a few options. If your business name and address appear, it is already on Google – check to see if you have the login details for the account if not you can choose the option to claim this business.
  5. If you want to edit the details, sign in with your Gmail account and then click “Add Your Business.”
  6. If nothing appears, you can add your business by clicking ‘Let me enter the full business details’
  7. Add a location that customer can visit. Similarly, if you work from home or remotely, you would probably want to choose ‘No’. However, for this exercise, we will select ‘Yes’. Click next.
  8. Choose the category that fits your business best. Choose your business category. However, try to choose the most accurate category possible, as you’re telling Google which type of customers should see your listing.
  9. Select which type of business listing to claim: Local Business & Place > Claim and verify your local business
  10. Enter your full address information in the fields that appear on the screen.
  11. Select “Verify Address” once complete. Google will send you a physical card to verify your ownership and business address so you can manage the listing on Google.
  12. Review all other details about how you want your company displayed on search engine results pages (SERPs) such as a business address, business name, physical location, hours of operation and phone number.
  13. Click ‘Finish’ when finished filling out all information

How to optimise your Google business listing

A common mistake that people make is that thinking the job is done once they have claimed and verified their listing.

Google My Business has a few features that you can use to optimise your listing and keep the listing relevant and up to date. It’s also worth noting that other people can actually suggest edits to your listing even though you have claimed it as your own. So it’s worth checking regularly.

So let’s make sure your listing is as good as it can be!

Go to the listing you want to edit. in the dashboard select “Info,” and then choose a section to fill out or update. Add as much information as you can, clicking the pencil next to the field you’d like to edit, making your change, and then choosing “Apply.”
